Khammam Fort in Khammam

Khammam fort in the city is a popular historic monument of Telangana which took 50 long years for its completion on Stambhadiri hills of Khammam. Khammam for is a cultural Heritage of India managed by the Archaeological Survey of India and it is a 1000 years old most popular tourist destination in South India. Numerous clans involved in the construction of Khammam fort. The fort construction started in the year 950 AD by the Kakatiy dynasty and then the Velama kings and Musunuri Nayaks continued the project and finally in the 1000 AD the fort construction was finished by the Reddy dynasty. In 1531 Qutb Shahi kingdom who ruled Deccan expanded the fort.

Khammam fort is a master piece for its architectural excellence that is constructed on Stambhadiri hill peak and it depicts both Hindu & Muslim fort architecture and it is 867 meter tall. The fort is entirely built using granite stone material and it spreads out in a 4 sq km length of landscape with 10 endpoints. The fort homes a masjid and a palace which was built by Nawab Shoukat Jung Hassam and his son Nawab Kazim Jung.  Also few ancient temples are built within the fort which all together gives a spiritual atmosphere for the tourist visiting the fort. Cannons are also sited within the fort. 

An annual mela is organized in the fort in the name of Stambhadri Sambaralu which is very popular. The fort ceilings and mantapas are well-supported by the strong rocks of Stambhadiri hills itself which is one of the attraction of the fort. From the fort the beautiful Khammam city can be viewed. The fort is also very close to Khammam bus station and the Khammam railway station. The venue is one of the most visited tourist spot in Telangana state.  The government of Telangana pays a lot of importance in maintaining and preserving the Khammam fort.

Touring towards the Ghats is a very popular tourist activity in Khammam as the city is rich in its water resource by means of Munneru River, Nagarjun Sagar canal, Lakaram Lake and many more water stream.
